Famous 1856 Flying Eagle Cent Rarity

Nice eye appeal and choice for the assigned grade. Pale brown surfaces are accented with rose highlights. For many years the 1856 Flying Eagle cent has been on the "most wanted" list for advanced numismatists. Indeed, of 19th century coins this variety is perhaps the most famous of all. No doubt the present piece was one of slightly more than 800 struck to show the new Flying Eagle design through distribution to congressmen, newspaper editors, and others of influence. It was then spent. It was not until about 1859 that great attention was focused on the 1856 Flying Eagle, during the early growth years of the hobby. There were hardly any to be found in circulation, and to supply the demand the Mint produced restrikes. In ensuing years perhaps a couple thousand more were made in Proof finish. Originals are very scarce today, and when offered attract a lot of attention, as no doubt will be the case with the one we offer here.
