The Americana Sale - January 16-17, 2007
For enthusiasts of United States coins, medals and paper money, Stack’s 10th annual Americana Sale holds a piece for all numismatic appetites. The auction is scheduled to take place in the evenings of January 16-17, 2007 at Le Parker-Meridien hotel in New York City. These nearly 2000 lots include selections from a variety of consignments, including the Cinclair Family Collection of U.S. Gold Coins, Dayton History, the Rev. Paul Harwell Collection, the Late Alfred C. Mahan and Mrs. Marian R. Mahan Collection, the Morgan Collection of Branch Mint Gold Coins, the George Polis Collection of U.S. Colonial Coins, the Southern Collection, and the Jody Windham Collection.

The first session, to take place January 16, is concentrated in U.S. federal issues from Half Cents through Double Eagles ($20.00 Gold). The session opens with a strong contingent of gold coins, with several collections and coins warranting specific mention.

The Morgan Collection of Branch Mint Gold

Gold coins of the Carson City and New Orleans dominate this collection, which was put together in the 1990s and features NGC and PCGS certified coins. With the added wealth of each new addition to the collection, the consignor felt like a Rockefeller or Morgan, and often referred to his holdings as the “Rockefeller-Morgan” collection. These golden treasures include such rarities as an MS-63 (NGC) 1840-O Half Eagle and a well-balanced 1907 gold Proof Set. Of more than honorable mention are complete sets of Carson City Half Eagles ($5.00 Gold) and Eagles ($10.00 Gold), starting in 1870 and culminating with the final year of issue, 1893. Startling coins among the Half Eagles include an AU-55 (NGC) 1870-CC, the finest graded 1875-CC at MS-63 (NGC), and an incredible 1881-CC graded MS-63 (NGC). The Eagles boast a wonderful first year of issue 1870-CC graded EF-45 (PCGS), a lustrous 1872-CC graded AU-55 (NGC), and an 1874-CC rarity similarly graded AU-55 (NGC).

The Cinclair Family Collection of U.S. Gold Coins

Concentrated in the Half Eagle denomination and spanning the 1834 Classic Head issue to the Liberty Head issues of the 1850s, the Cinclair Family Collection is an old hoard that is remarkable for its originality, quality, and the rarity of several of these coins. Gold coin aficionados will find such startling coins as one of the finest known 1847-C Half Eagles, graded MS-63 (NGC), a remarkable Choice BU-63 1852 Half Eagle, and a high grade BU, nearly Choice-62 1854 Small Date Double Eagle. More common issues are available in multiples, such as 1844-O, 1847 and 1852 Half Eagles, and the Gold Rush collector will delight in a pair of 1849 Half Eagles that were probably plucked from circulation not long after their issue!

Additional U.S. Gold Coins

Gold coin highlights do not end with the Morgan and Cinclair Family Collections, but include significant type coins and key dates among all denominations. A healthy offering of Charlotte, Dahlonega and New Orleans gold are featured, including an MS-61 (NGC) 1854-D Gold Dollar, a Choice AU-55 1839-C Quarter Eagle, an AU-58 (NGC) 1847-D Quarter Eagle, one of the finest known 1854-O Three Dollar Gold (graded MS-62 by NGC), a Choice AU-58 1844-C Half Eagle, and a Choice AU-58 1857-C Half Eagle, among many others. Collectors of later issues will vie for such beauties as a 1907 Wire Rim Eagle conservatively graded MS-62 (NGC) and not less than 6 MCMVII (1907) High Relief Double Eagles ranging from a well-appreciated Choice VF to a near Gem specimen. Commemorative Gold Coins feature at least one of all issues and feature an incredible 3 different 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 issues, one round and two octagonal.
